She jumped involuntarily when two rifles boomed in her ears. Loud yells filled the air, then moccasined feet pounded off into the forest.

Caleb peered from behind their shelter. Two bodies lay sprawled in the snow. He grinned his satisfaction. Then, hastily pouring powder and bullet, he and Long Step waited for the next charge.

They had little chance of outfighting them, he knew, and his hand went to the knife at his waist. Should he plunge it into Roxanne's heart now? She was barely conscious and would have no idea what he intended when he took her into his arms.

A cold tremor went through him at the thought. Would he be able to do it-to still her life for all time? But the knowledge of what the red men would do to her chilled his blood even more, and slowly he began to withdraw the knife. Long Step saw what he intended to do and nodded his head solemnly.

Then he stopped with the knife half-unsheathed. The preacher's song had started up again and was coming closer. He let the knife slide back in place. An idea had come to him. Two ideas, in fact. And one was so strong it left him weak.

He touched the Indian's shoulder. "I'm gonna try to get to that crazy old preacher," he whispered. "Keep me covered."

With the help of his elbows, Caleb inched along on his stomach, from boulder to boulder. Sometimes the snow almost covered him, in drifts as high as three feet. Finally, he caught sight of old James struggling slowly in snow to his knees.

When the man of cloth drew opposite him, Caleb called his name as loudly as he dared. Thankfully, the preacher either heard or sensed his presence for he made his way to Caleb and squatted down beside him. They conversed for a few minutes, then James nodded his head and followed Caleb back to the shelter.
